Five Tips For Creating Successful Flower Beds

Flower Bed

As you prepare for your spring planting, keep these tips in mind to ensure you have a beautiful garden for years to come.

  1. Establish the outline of the bed design that you would like for your landscaping.  Avoid being too conservative when it comes to laying out the planting beds.  Make the beds at least 4′ wide at their narrowest point.
  2. Take into consideration the size of the plants once they mature.  Allow some room for growth so that your landscape will come together and look nice five years from now.
  3. Raise the beds at least 10″ with good, rich topsoil.  Topsoil is expensive, and toting it is hard work, but don’t let either of these points enter into your decision of how much topsoil to buy.  It is the most important step you can take to ensure a successful flower bed.
  4. Don’t waste your time or money installing plastic or weed barrier cloth over top of the soil.  They don’t normally work and removing them is time consuming and tedious.  Instead, opt for a chemical weed control or an organic alternative.
  5. Do not plant your plants too deep.  They need to breath so they have the ability to transfer oxygen to the root system.
